20th Anniversary Special Edition

 

Alla fine degli anni ‘90 mio padre desiderò dare forma ad un progetto che aveva a cuore: consegnare all’Italia ed al mondo un’opportunità per innamorarsi del Circo, della sua antica tradizione e di tutte le sue possibili implicazioni nel più ampio panorama artistico e culturale.

Mio padre Giulio sognava in grande ma sapeva di poter contare sull’impegno corale dei suoi affetti più cari, di mia madre Mirella e di tutta la nostra grande famiglia.

Non mise mano alla realizzazione di un nuovo complesso circense; quel tipo di esperienza gli era già appartenuta per molti anni e ad essa aveva dedicato tanta passione. Mio padre non immaginava uno spettacolo itinerante, non un cliché già collaudato, ma qualcosa di unico, capace di assegnare al mondo del Circo ed a ciascuna delle sue discipline quella dignità e quella autorevolezza che solo un evento dal carattere straordinario avrebbe potuto attribuire.

Fu così che nel 1999 si poté realizzare la prima edizione del Festival Internazionale del Circo che assunse, quale propria denominazione, il nome della città di Latina.

Tenacia, spirito di gruppo, sacrificio hanno accompagnato tutti noi, Giulio Montico in testa, per le prime edizioni delFestival; un’unica, forte ambizione: far crescere l’evento affinchè di anno in anno, con il succedersi delle varie edizioni potesse maturare una vera caratura internazionale.

Se nell’immediato quel 1 Settembre 2008 rappresentò una tappa terribile della nostra vicenda umana, oggi a quel ritorno in cielo riesco ad attribuire, tra gli altri, anche un altro significato: quello di un padre, un uomo, un artista che desideri rendere eterna ed universale la propria memoria attraverso il segno permanente di ciò che ha creato dal nulla: un Festival che annualmente illumina la pista di Latina di una luce i cui riflessi raggiungono ogni continente.

È infinito l’orgoglio con il quale oggi, ovunque mi rechi nel mondo per partecipare ad eventi di settore, mi accorgo che artisti, operatori o semplici appassionati del Circo, se chiamati a fare un’associazione di idee tra l’Italia e qualcos’altro, quasi sempre pensino al “nostro” Festival. Un Festival che, pertanto, già dal 2015 ha assunto la denominazione di “International Circus Festival of Italy”, proprio a sottolineare la rilevanza conseguita tra le manifestazioni dedicate, nelmondo, alla celebrazione del Circo. Questo mi dà la misura di come il sogno preconizzato da mio padre oggi sia assoluta realtà.

La ventesima edizione del Festival, dunque, assume una serie di significati del tutto speciali:

1. Celebrazione: quattro lustri di ininterrotta attività rappresentano l’opportunità per riflettere sulla credibilità riconosciuta alla manifestazione da quanti, negli anni, attraverso differenti modalità, ne hanno attestato l’autorevolezza; penso alle Istituzioni pubbliche, alle Associazioni di categoria, ai grandi partner, alle testate giornalistiche e di settore ed in particolare al Parlamento Europeo che quest’anno ci onora del suo Alto Patrocinio.

2. Festa: il numero degli artisti, degli ospiti d’onore, delle personalità del mondo del Circo, dei giurati che in venti anni hanno onorato il Festival della loro partecipazione è dell’ordine delle migliaia. Tanti, tantissimi di loro saranno nuovamente a Latina ad Ottobre.

3. Meraviglia: intorno all’evento di spettacolo in senso stretto, si sono affermati negli anni tanti eventi collaterali che sono il segno tangibile di come il Circo sia foriero di tante belle opportunità capaci di mescolare tra loro le differenti arti e la cultura.

4. Vittoria (parziale): sono innumerevoli le difficoltà che si incontrano per la realizzazione di una kermesse circense: risorse limitate, burocrazia farraginosa, forme di dissenso non sempre civili… si tratta di veri e propri “fardelli” che, di anno in anno, appesantiscono il lavoro di produzione. Come non auspicare normative condivise, correttezza delle relazioni, rispetto delle reciproche posizioni…

5. Grazie: venti edizioni del Festival non sarebbero state possibili senza la collaborazione di innumerevoli persone di buona volontà; penso alla produzione, alla segreteria, al personale incaricato dell’accoglienza, ai tecnici, agli operai, agli operatori della comunicazione ed a tutta la grande famiglia del Festival. A loro il mio più sentito ringraziamento.

Qualcuno mi ha chiesto: “per quale motivo una manifestazione dedicata al Circo, ideata nel 1999, superando ogni ostacolo, è giunta così forte, in modo quasi imperiale, alla celebrazione del suo ventennale?”. Credo che una possibile risposta sia ben rappresentata nello scatto fotografico che di anno in anno realizziamo alla fine dell’evento: quella pista valica ogni barriera: accomuna persone differenti per provenienza geografica, cultura, religione. Mette insieme tutti al di là di tutto. E ciascuno sorride, cha abbia vinto oppure no. La pista del Festival è inclusiva, mette in scena l’allegria, racconta la bellezza, realizza la gioia, produce la pace. Ricette migliori?

At the end of the ‘90s my father had a dream: he wanted to create a way for Italy, and for the rest of the world, to connect with and to enjoy the Circus and its ancient traditions, and all its cultural and artistic connotations on a wider scale.

My father Giulio dreamt big, but he knew he could count on the support of those closest to him, my mother Mirella, and our big family.

He didn’t try to create a new circus company; he had already been a part of that world for many years, and had dedicated himself to it with real passion. My father wasn’t thinking about the usual travelling circus, but about something unique, something that would be big enough and magnificent enough to showcase the various disciplines of the circus in a decorous and stylish manner.

In 1999 the first edition of the International Circus Festival took place, incorporating the name of the city of Latina.

Persistence, team spirit and sacrifice were our and Giulio Montico’s companions for the first editions of the Festival. There was only one, precise goal: to make the event better year by year, until it started to reach international levels.

When my father died on September 1st, 2008, it was a terrible shock for all of us at the time, but with the continuing success of his Festival, I like to think that he has left an eternal and universal legacy for us all: an event that lights up Latina every year, with stars that go on to shine all over the world.

It is with great pride that, as I travel around the world to take part in related events, I realise that performers, organisers and Circus fans, when they think of Italy, think of ‘our’ Festival. In 2015 it became the ‘International Circus of Italy’, underlining its importance alongside similar events around the world that are dedicated to the Circus, and this makes me realise that the dream of my father is now a reality.

The twentieth edition of the Festival is especially significant in several ways:

1. Celebration: twenty years of uninterrupted activity are a reason to reflect on the respect that this Festival has earnt over the years from governing bodies, as the European Parliament, circus associations, important partnerships, and general and entertainment publications.

2. Festivity: over the past twenty years thousands of performers, guest stars, Circus celebrities, and judges have honoured the Festival with their presence. Many of them will be here again in Latina in October.

3. Wonder: over the years, numerous additional events have been generated to enrich the Festival, proving how the Circus can be a focal point for a variety of artistic and cultural initiatives.

4. Victory (partial): so many different obstacles stand in the way of the production of a circus event: limited funds, bureaucratic minefields, questionable protests… every year these burdens try to weigh us down. We can only hope for improvement in regulations, correctness in relationships, and respect for differing positions…

5. Gratitude: twenty editions of the Festival wouldn’t be possible with the cooperation of numerous generous people; I’m thinking of the production team, the office team, the people in charge of welcoming our visitors, the technical staff, the workmen, the communications team, and the whole Festival family. My deep thanks goes to all of them.

Someone asked me: “how did an event dedicated to the Circus, originating in 1999, manage to overcome so many obstacles, and reach its 20th anniversary with such magnitude?” I think a possible reply could be in the photograph thatwe take at the conclusion of our annual event: the Circus ring knows no barriers. It unites people from different countries, cultures, and religions, regardless of anything else, and everyone smiles, whether they win or not. The Circus ring is a place where happiness and beauty reign, in an atmosphere of peace. Happy Festival to all… and happy 20th anniversary!
